Do you allow cellphone within your youth group? There are some reasons not to do it. There are also reasons to do it. Which one outweighs the other?
Well, the first point to consider is that your youth will have their cellphones almost surgically attached to their hands every minute of every day that they are not in your youth group. So, should we be outlawing them during youth group? Or, should we be utilizing them and teaching them how to use them in a responsible Christ-like manner?
If your youth are taught to properly use them, cellphones can be a powerful tool for your youth group. Think of each SmartPhone as a tiny pocket-sized personal computer (and that’s not a stretch..that’s really what they are). Once you consider that, you realize that almost every single one of your youth brings a personal computer with them to your youth group meetings. So, the question is, are you going to utilize that resource or outlaw it?
During this series, I will be giving you some tips and ideas of how you can use cellphones and teach your youth to use cellphones responsibly during your youth group meetings.
One of the first and most obvious ways is to simply encourage them to Tweet during your meetings. For those of you who may not be accustomed to Twitter, I can already hear you screaming, “NO! NO! If they are tweeting, they can’t pay attention to what I’m saying!!”
But, have you ever tried to live Tweet an event yourself? If you have, you will discover that you have to pay complete attention to what is being said to live Tweet the event.
Live Tweeting forces the youth to pay attention to what you are saying. If they don’t pay attention, they won’t have a clue what to say on your hashtag.
Live Tweeting forces your youth to think more deeply about the subject. Don’t be afraid to allow them to ask questions on the hashtag. You can have some adults that you trust assigned to respond to the questions during the service. Or, you can choose to respond to all questions after the service is over. Or, you can even have your media person pull up some relevant questions from the hashtag for you to respond to as you speak.
Live Tweeting gets the attention of other youth who don’t even attend your church. If your youth are on Twitter, they most likely have people following them. Each time your youth tweet on your hashtag, all of their friends see it. Anytime people see a lot of activity on a Twitter hashtag, they want to know what is up. This can create an interest in your youth group that makes people want to see what’s up with your youth group.
If you would like to find out more about how you can use hashtags and Twitter during your youth services, you can read this good article about using Twitter hashtags for events.
